Ombra Lamp

People require lighting in all areas in their home: to be able to see what they are doing, sometimes they require a lighting on a table, on a counter top for decoration, or even in a corner for general lighting. This sort of versatility lacks in many types of lamps, making it necessary to have many different lamp types in several areas of our homes. This is why having a single lamp that can meet the different lighting needs, required in a home, is necessary and could potentially be very valuable for someone who does not want to have to invest in many lighting sources for one small home. I was inspired to create a lamp that can meet these specific needs and still serve as an aesthetically pleasing object for the interior of a home. When creating this lamp, inspiration in material was one of the main elements that drove the visual aspect of the lamp. Having studied and investigated the works of Isamu Noguchi, among other designers, I realized how rice paper and the effect created by light transmitted through it, can provide for a very pleasing illumination. After investigating the different materials that can be used to create lighting effects, for example, coffee filters, washing sheets, newspaper, etc., I found that paper creates such an intriguing and beautiful effect with light that is neither transparent nor obscure to the light. It allows for the transmission of light through the material, creating one of a kind shadows and light reflections.

Starry Lamp

The Starry Lamp is meant to comfort people late at night when they wish for a bright accent to keep them and their room warm. The material used to create the starry lamp is carbon steel. Although it is meant to stay indoors and isn’t likely to corrode due to weather, I decided apply a rose gold finish to the metal to give a more compelling and bright sensation.
